Geography and Topography in the Gesta Danorum: Gesta Danorum is a
Latin history of Denmark from its origins to 1185. It contains much geographical
and topographical information drawn from Norse sources but
subordinated to a Classical frame of reference. In this regard, the author,
Saxo Grammaticus, is influenced mainly by Martianus Capella and uses
many verbal borrowings from De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii to add
depth to the text and show the learned reader that the new and strange information
is compatible with Classical cosmography.
